Teaching Your Kids to Be Honest

I remember the first time my oldest told me a lie and how heartbroken I was… not only because my sweet and innocent little girl just fibbed to my face, but because of how bad of a mother it made me feel. Now a mother of three and 9 years of mothering under my belt, there is one thing I have learned and that is not all of our children’s poor choices are a reflection of our parenting. No one in this world is perfect, we all make mistakes and telling lies is just one of those mistakes. Just like our children needed us to teach them to speak, walk, be kind and use manners… they also need us to teach them to be honest individuals. I have also discovered that children don’t always take your word and it isn’t as simple as just telling them “it’s not OK to lie!” Teaching your kids to be honest is in no way a simple task. They need visuals, proof… a full explanation that will answer their many questions on the topic. Whether it be a book, game or movie, have that visual for them and real life example is going to give them a better understanding. A few of my favorite kid’s movies that touch on lying are ready to stream on Netflix and I am delighted to share them with you! I am particularity fond of VeggieTales, there is just something so captivating about those upbeat veggies telling a tale. I swear I have the tunes stuck in my head for weeks after we watch a VeggieTales movie. Then there is Care Bears, another great cast of cartoon characters that can always get children to follow along and grasp the important lesson they are trying to teach! My kid’s seriously can not get enough of How To Train Your Dragon 2… what an adorable, fun and exciting movie. This would be a perfect film for a family movie night, be prepared to get your giggles on!
