Getting Ready for In-Person School? Here’s What You Need to Do

For the past year, kids left the schoolhouse behind and met with their teachers and classmates online for virtual school. But many parts of the country are opening up in-person schooling before the end of the 2020-21 school season. And if they aren’t opening this year, going back to school will be a reality for most children by the fall of 2021.

But school probably isn’t going to look like it did before. Not only are you going to have to prepare your children for what to expect when they get back in the classroom, but you have to make sure they have everything they need when the time arrives.

Talk to Your Kids

Since young children up to age 12 won’t see a vaccine administration plan until the beginning of 2022, schools have to set up a system to keep them safe. Some of that safety will stem from mask mandates, desk distancing, and schedule staggering, while the schools will probably implement air filters and open windows as well.

The only way these safety measures will work to their potential is by having the kids cooperate during in-person learning. Expecting a young child to understand the implications of not following protocol without explanation is unreasonable, so it’s essential to fully inform them on what to expect. Contact your school and make sure you have all the details regarding their plans to keep your child safe in plenty of time to arm them with the information they need to follow the rules. If they know what the upcoming school year will look like, they’re more likely to cooperate with the new system.

Be Sure Everything Is Up-to-Date

Before sending your child off to school, it’s a good idea to have a checkup to make sure they’re on-track, healthy, and ready for class. The pandemic had many people put off regular checkups, but since doctors are among the first to receive the vaccine, you have an extra layer of protection at your appointment. Not only that, but they still follow protocols to keep you safe. And as long as you do your part and follow CDC guidelines, there’s no reason not to schedule those appointments.

So, whether you see a dentist in Winnetka, IL, or a pediatrician in Portland, MN, you might want to call ahead to secure your spot.

Gather the Supplies

When getting your kids ready for in-person school, the supplies don’t differ much from what you would typically buy. It’s a good idea to check with your child’s school to see if they have a list you can download at home so you can gather what you need. In addition to the supplies you normally purchase, you’ll likely need to include hand sanitizer, cleaning wipes, and extra masks. To be sure, call the school or check on their website before putting in your order.

Keep in mind that if in-person learning for your kids has your anxiety high and you want to wait until the vaccine is available for them, homeschooling is an option. Just check with your state’s laws before making your decision because each state has different protocols and rules to follow in order to homeschool.

The Choice Is Yours

No matter what you decide to do this year and next, be sure to involve your children in the process. As you learn anything new, arm them with the information and supplies they need for a new school year. After all, knowledge is power, and you want them as ready as possible.
