Extra Crispy Oven Baked French Fries

One of our family’s favorite sides are these delicious and flavorful extra crispy oven baked french fries! Not only are they super easy to make, but they are healthy because this particular recipe does not require deep frying or adding salts! My kids literally gobble these right up every time I make them, they are so light a crispy and I just love how non greasy they are.

My first suggestion for you before you even attempt to make these fries is to get yourself a cooling rack! I am telling you right now, this inexpensive kitchen necessity is going to be a life changer. Instead of cooking in a pan and having to flip them, you can cook them right on top of the cooling rack. Because the cooling rack exposes the entire french fry, it completely eliminates the need to flip them… plus they come out so much crispier in a shorter cooking time. Your next step is peeling, washing and slicing the fries. We prefer to cut them in a shoestring style french fry, but feel free to cut them in wedges or whichever way you prefer. Extra Crispy Oven Baked French Fries

Place your chopped french fries in a bowl of water (completely covering them) and allow them to soak for thirty minutes. This is going to remove the starch from the potatoes, which will result in crispier fries.

Once your potatoes have soaked, drain them. DO NOT DRY THEM OFF! I mentioned at the beginning of this post they were are trying to achieve a healthier version of french fries, which means we are going to eliminate oils. Place your wet potatoes into a new bowl and get out your seasonings. Here are the following seasonings used in this recipe:

Now you will notice that I didn’t include any measurements and that’s because I personally don’t measure them out… I just sprinkle in enough chili powder, cumin and basil to cover all of the fries, it’s personal preference really. The nutritional yeast on the other hand? You are going to coat your potatoes in this! The nutritional yeast is not only going to add to the crispness, but it is so incredibly delicious and healthy for you! Don’t be afraid to coat your potatoes in these, if I had to guess I would say I use probably 1-4-1/2 cup.

The final step is to place your cooling rack on top of a baking sheet, this will keep the excess seasoning from falling into your stove and making it messy. Place your potatoes slices in rows making sure that you space them, they will not cook evenly if there are potatoes touching or on top of each other.

Cook your potatoes at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes, but keep a close eye on them because cooking time is going to depend on how thin/thick you cut your fries. No need to flip them at all, just take them out once they are done, let cool and enjoy alongside your favorite dip!

  1. Tried this recipe. I have to say it was very easy to make. The fries did come out crispy. I would next time cook them longer for a more crisp fry. I did not like the yeast flavor. Next time I would go heavier on the seasoning . Overall flavor was bland and the yeast was too prominent for my taste.

  2. I’ve seen other recipes & other uses for nutritional yeast not sure where to buy it. Grocery store or health food store?Karen

  3. Is there an actual recipe? I made one of the other baked fries recipe few days ago but fries were not crispy. I like that you recommend putting fries on baking rack.
