6 Things to avoid when having your dog groomed

Are you planning to take your dog to a groomer soon? If it is your first time and you are anxious for your dog, make sure to read below for some things to avoid.

  1. Avoid doing basic grooming at home – Don’t give your groomer a problem and bring your dog there completely dirty and with overgrown hair and nails. Your responsibility as a pet owner is not just or provide them with food and shelter but to also take care of their appearance. Make sure to not just bathe your dog as needed but to also brush them and trim their nails when necessary.

  1. Do be sure to get your dog used to grooming as early as possible – Some dogs find it traumatic when they go to the groomer. You can ease their worries as early as possible by getting them used to grooming. Make bath time an enjoyable time for them. Start grooming as early as possible so they will get used to having their paws and ears cleaned too. You can try incorporating treats to make it easier for them to accept the grooming process.

  1. Make sure to use the proper dog grooming equipment – If you are going to do your own dog grooming, you need to make sure that you invest in the proper equipment. One of the things you need to invest in is the right nail trimming equipment. You can’t just use any regular nail trimmer. You need to make sure that it is very sharp. Nail trimming can be very tedious so you need to be careful. You should also purchase a Furminator, which has more features than just your regular dor brush.

  1. Make sure to give your dog a potty break before grooming – It can already feel uncomfortable for a dog to be groomed. You can just imagine how much more uncomfortable it will be if they really have to answer the call of nature. Make sure to take your dog for a walk and have them do their business before you take them to the groomer.

  1. Refrain from hanging around during the grooming session – If you have ever tried to stay inside the room while your dog is being groomed, then you know how difficult it can be. It is especially hard if it is your dog’s first time or they are not yet familiar with the groomer. They will try to reach you or even jump just to get to you. This is dangerous, not just for the groomer but your dog as well. If their ears are being cleaned or their nails are being trimmed, they can get hurt if they do not stay still. Trust your groomer that they are trained enough to keep your dog calm, and enjoy your alone time while waiting for the grooming session to finish.

  1. Choosing a groomer that does not have bad reviews – Your choice of a groomer is very crucial. There are a lot of horror stories of pets getting hurt or worse die during a grooming session. If you have friends who are dog owners too, get recommendations from them about the groomers they trust and can fit in with your budget.

  1. Thanks for reminding me that I also have to trim my dog’s nails at home if necessary. I got my pet two months ago and since he’s still a small puppy, I haven’t done enough effort to maintain his appearance. It might be a good idea to brush him first and trim his nails before bringing him to a professional groomer.
