What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

Of all of the calamities that can happen to your house, a burst pipe is really not a joke. Not only can it cause financial strain, but it can also cause panic, stress and structural damage to the house.

  • Turn the water off. If you noticed a leak anywhere, even a drip, the first thing that you should do is shut off the water completely. If your pipe burst because of frozen water or cold plumbing, speak to the plumber about this when he arrives.
  • Try to move your belongings. If you can, move your belongings out of the path of the leaking pipe and any water collected. You don’t want your things to be affected just because your pipe has burst. If you insure that you move your stuff, you’re going to make it easier for the plumber to get there, and your things will stay dry and not collect any bacteria due to the old murky water.
