Tips to Get Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night

Getting your baby back to sleep through the night is a common challenge among parents. Because their little tummies aren’t big enough to keep them full throughout the night, newborns must wake every few hours to feed. However, as your child grows, they will require fewer overnight feedings. This is normally the time when parents expect their newborns to begin sleeping through the night, but things don’t always go as planned, leaving parents exhausted and looking for answers.

  1. Establish a bedtime routine

It’s never too early to establish a sleep routine. Your bedtime routine should be straightforward and long-lasting so that you can follow it every night. Even the slightest change in your baby’s schedule can set them off, causing them to wake up more frequently at night. Swaddling and shushing are two calming, soothing actions that your infant appears to respond to. The bedtime routine can be where you create positive sleep associations for your baby.

  1. Limit distractions

Just like you, babies need to unwind. So around 30 minutes before bedtime, start switching gears (low lighting, low noise). This assists in the synchronization of your child’s internal clock.

  1. Start weaning the night feedings

Once your doctor has permitted you to quit night feedings, you should gradually reduce them. Because you nursed your kid every time they woke up, feeding became a sleep connection in many circumstances. That doesn’t mean your baby won’t desire it now that it’s no longer necessary.  Just because that’s no longer necessary, doesn’t mean your baby won’t want it anymore.

You must try to keep your infant on a consistent sleep pattern. Naps should last at least 30 to 45 minutes but no longer than 3 hours.

If your child doesn’t get enough sleep, they may become overtired, fussy, and have trouble falling asleep — and staying asleep — in the evening.

Ambiance can be everything! Maintain a suitable temperature in the room, keep it dark, and experiment with some white noise.

  1. When the sun sets outside, make it dark inside too

Your baby’s body creates the sleep hormone melatonin as it gets dark after sunset. Melatonin production will be disrupted if they are exposed to artificial light. Dim the lights inside the house at sunset. This is a simple approach to work with nature’s rhythms.
