As a mother to three children I am no stranger to caring for sick kids and/or their injuries and visiting the doctor’s office or urgent care. There is often that moment when you are facing a decision on whether it’s worth a trip to the doctors or urgent care. I am that type of mom that will use going to the doctor’s office as a last resort. Dragging my sick child to the office when they just want to stay in bed and sleep is the worse and I try to avoid that as much as possible. But I still want that reassurance that my child doesn’t need any additional care. What is a mom to do in a circumstance such as this? Amwell has been my solution to connecting with doctors before making the decision to head to urgent care or office. Here are some reasons why I find this to be the best option for moms debating whether they should bring their child in or not.

Navigating the Amwell website is simple, creating an account is even easier! Once you have created profiles for everyone in the family, all you have to do is click on the person that you are concerned about then find a doctor you would like to speak to. Amwell matches you with the best doctors and provides you with a form to fill out so the doctor already knows why you are contacting them.

Amwell, it is the nation’s largest telehealth company that can connect you with board-certified, licensed doctors for immediate and live, online visits (day or night, on either mobile or desktop.) I love that the Amwell doctors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so I am able reach someone no matter what time or day you have a question… because any parent can tell you that kids are sick at the most inconvenient times! Let me give you an example.

Last November we drove to Florida to spend Thanksgiving. During one of our frequent rest stop breaks the kids must have picked up a bug because the night we arrived at our destination… two of the three were keeled over in pain. They spent the next 12 hours with upset stomachs, my third child eventually joined in on the phone. I was many miles away from home, wasn’t familiar with the area and unsure how serious this illness was. All three kids had high fevers, their upset stomachs had them running to the bathroom every 10 minutes and when they weren’t in the bathroom they were sleeping. I decided during that time to connect with a doctor on Amwell to avoid having to bring them out, but still be able to be informed on how they should be treated.

I was able to connect with a doctor that provided me with information on what I should be giving them for medicine, how much fluids I should be pushing, and when would it be wise to bring them to urgent care. This ended up being a 24 hour bug and with lots of fluids and sleep, the kids were good as new the following day! I was so glad that I had a professional to reassure me that they didn’t need to be seen, that fluids and sleep should help their body fight off the illness. Very thankful for a service that can help me no matter where we are! We ended up having a really great time on our trip despite that minor hiccup!

  1. I like that you pointed out that taking the kid to the urgent care facility is a wise decision so that they will have a better condition within 24 hours. I guess it would really be wise to know where an urgent care facility is in our area for those kinds of emergency situations. My son has breathing issues at times, so I need to make sure to have an urgent care facility we can go to if there is really a life-threatening situation that might happen to him.
