How to Give your Child More Support at School

Children can easily do well at school, if they have friends and family who are actively trying to take an interest in their schoolwork. If you can make sure that you are involved with your child’s education, even in the smallest way then this will help to show that you genuinely care about how they do, and it will also make them feel much more supported. Whatever your family situation or lifestyle, you have to remember that it is never too late for you to help them to develop a positive attitude towards learning.

Give Encouragement

If possible, you need to give as much encouragement as you can in regard to your child and their achievement. It doesn’t matter how big or small the achievement might have been, because it is a fantastic way for you to boost your child’s confidence. Learn together, do things together and also make sure that you visit as many interesting places as possible. By talking about the things that you have seen on television and then encouraging your child to ask questions, you can help to support their development too. When your child gets home from school, they may be pretty tired, so be mindful about firing too many questions at them.

Provide Feedback

Make sure that you are giving feedback rather than criticism. Telling your child “that didn’t seem to work” is much better than telling them “you got it wrong”. If you can do this then you can help them to understand where they went wrong so you can help them in the future.  You may feel as though talking to the school or contacting your child’s teacher is difficult, and you may think that they won’t have time for you as well. That being said, finding out more about their school life and what it is they are learning, helps to show that you care about their education and progress. This helps you to find out what kind of support your child needs at home, so be mindful of this if you can. Support them out of School

Parents often want to introduce a lot of interests in school so that children then have the chance to explore other things that they love. That being said, you need to give them support out of school too. Support their reading by buying them magazines, books or even newspapers. Let your child see you reading as well, so you can benefit them. When your child comes home from school, they may be too exhausted to read, so instead, help them in other ways. If you know that they have been reading a particular book in school, why not watch the movie with them at home?

Don’t Underestimate The Power of a Good Routine

Having a routine, or a schedule is the best way for you to handle your child’s curriculum.  It can reduce stress for you as well as for your kids. There are many ways for you to organise your home for your kids, such as by making sure that they have a designated area for their home studies. Another way for you to support them would be for you to look into an online school agenda. This will store whatever you need in the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about losing or forgetting something.

Encourage Independence where Possible

If you micromanage every single aspect of your child’s education then this is something you’ll want to avoid. Be involved but make sure that you are not overt. Help them to really develop their understanding of how things work and also make sure that you help them to hone their skills. If you can do this then you will soon find that it is easier than ever to set them a good educational foundation.

Of course, if you want to try and give your child more support then this is easy to do when you know what steps you need to take. If you want to help your child even more then it could be wise for you to enrol them in an after-school club as this will help you to push their learning even more. Of course, it’s also wise for you to try and look into online learning if you haven’t done so already, so be mindful of that if you want to give them the best experience with their education.
