How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs Permanently

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs PermanentlyI have been dealing with bed bugs last summer up to the point that I considered burning all of my clothes and simply moving away. I didn’t know what to do anymore in order to get rid of the bed bugs; I had already tried everything (or so I thought). All the chemicals in stores, check. Fancy and really expensive extermination team, check.

What finally helped me deal with the problem once and for all was this article. It described some home remedies for bed bugs that I didn’t really know at first if they’d work, but I tried them anyway. It turned out to be the best decision I ever took. Within one month, I had gotten rid of all the bed bugs in my house, I got to keep my things and didn’t have to move away either.

I will now tell you exactly what I did to get rid of bed bugs and how I did it. I hope this will help anyone dealing with this kind of infestation as well.

5 Remedies for Bed Bugs That Really Work

1. Black walnut tea.

This is one of the few substances that has pesticide properties but is completely harmless to humans regardless of its concentration. I don’t have any pets myself so I couldn’t tell you how they react to it. To be on the safe side, I would suggest keeping the black walnut tea away from them, just in case.

To use it, boil two cups of water with 3-4 tablespoons of black walnut tea, for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it steep for another 15 minutes. This should brew it nice and good. When the tea cools, fill a spray bottle with it and spray it all around your bed, in the bed, on all sides of the mattress, inside the pillow cases… you get it, everywhere.

2. Baby powder

As a mommy, I always have some baby powder around and I’ll probably have it when my kids are all grown up, too. I’ve gotten used to it as a beauty hack. But that’s another story.

The thing with any talc based powder is that its particles are so fine it chokes the bed bugs, filling up their airwaves. It gets stuck in all the cracks of their exoskeletons and leaves them unable to breathe. It sounds cruel but it is what it is and we want to get rid of them as fast and as definitive as possible.

To use it, sprinkle a layer of baby powder generously inside all the spaces in your bed, rub it all over the mattress, on the bed posts, sprinkle it under the bed and so on. You can place a plastic sheet over the entire bed for a week or so, until they all die.

3. Lavender

I was lucky to have some fresh lavender around, but you don’t really need it fresh for its pesticide properties. You can also use dry flowers, or powdered lavender, or even lavender oil. Just mix it with 2 cups of water and sprinkle it generously in the usual places in, on and around your bed. It will kill the bed bugs and it will make your bedroom smell dreamy, too.

4. Calamut

Calamut is another herb with natural anti-insect properties. You can buy it from most drugstores in powdered form. I mixed mine with water and applied it on all surfaces around the bed and in the bed as well.

It’s great because it also kills the bug eggs, not just the bugs already hatched. You can prevent the vicious circle of re-infestation this way, although having your bed neatly coated in baby powder definitely helps, too.

5. Lemongrass

Finally, I also gave lemongrass a try and was very happy I decided to do it. It’s also one of the few substances that kills both adult bugs and their eggs, and is completely harmless to humans. It also has plenty of other uses and benefits beyond its ability to kill bed bugs. What more could you ask for?

I poured 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil into 2 cups of water and sprinkled it everywhere in, on and around the bed with a spray bottle. Smelled great and worked great, no complaints.

How to Apply These Home Remedies to Get Rid of the Bed Bugs for Good

To tell you the truth, I would be hard-pressed to say which one these home remedies for bed begs was the best. Most of them were applied at the same time with the others, or at a distance of 2-3 days.

I believe that this somewhat chaotic approach is actually just what’s needed to get rid of the bed bugs for good. This way, they won’t know what hit them, and if by any chance some adult bugs or some eggs survive in an unchecked corner of the mattress, the next wave of remedies will get to them.

Also, please notice how some of these remedies complete each other so great: if a substance kills the bugs, next you apply one that kills the eggs, and then drown everything in baby powder so no lone surviving bug can make it.

As I said, I was very happy with that article and how it really helped me with a problem that was driving me nuts. If you ever have any issues with bed bugs, just bookmark it and you’ll be ok.
