How to Dress for Success as a Small Business Owner

On the face of it, as a small business owner, you might think what you wear or how you present yourself matters. Not entirely. After all, what you do needs to do the talking and impress clients. The way you dress and your appearance make a good impression of yourself and your company. As superficial as that sounds, when people deal with small businesses, they expect a level of professionalism, and your attire makes up part of that image.

Fitted Suits

A professional wardrobe should be tailored with fitted suits. The suit should be slimming, flattering, and cut in a way that makes you look taller. Premium menswear suits are more formal and professional than a blazer and slacks. It gives you the right amount of seriousness and authority for those occasions. And rather than looking like the typical businessman, you’ll look like a leader. The added benefit is that it will make your clothes last longer because they won’t need to be dry-cleaned as often.

Day to Night Versatility

However, your professional appearance need not be limited to office hours. Just because you work in a small business doesn’t mean you’re chained to the cubicle all day.

It’s important to dress appropriately for the different types of gigs we might have an initial meeting with a client, networking event, or presentation.

There are many occasions on which you’ll want to dress professionally and make a great impression. It’s best to be prepared and have at least one suit handy. That being said, there are plenty of ways you can wear a suit in casual settings. For example, you can pull off wearing black pants with your blazer and tie with sneakers on the weekend or when running errands during the day. Just keep in mind that while this look works well at some types of events, it’s best not to wear these types of combinations when attending an interview or meeting with clients.

Accessories

Accessories are a great way to dress for success, and they don’t have to be expensive. For example, you could wear an elegant watch on your wrist or some lovely jewelry. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but if you want to look the part of a successful business person, accessories are an excellent way to do it without breaking the bank.

Many people will dress up for important meetings, and even when they aren’t necessary, it’s always best to dress in whatever way reflects your company’s image and values. If you want to wear something more casual, that’s fine too, but people might not take you seriously if they think you’re too laidback. So it’s always best to err on the side of caution in these situations.

Invest In Tailored Pieces

A good suit can make you feel more confident and attract more clients. Investing in tailored pieces will help you look like a professional. However, if you want to save money and still look polished, invest in a dress shirt with a nice pair of trousers or khakis. Depending on your business profession, it may also be appropriate for you to wear dress shoes, loafers, or oxfords.

A successful small business owner has a level of professionalism about them at all times. That means dressing appropriately for your industry and being able to communicate that same sense of professionalism through your clothing.
