We are told all the time by our baby’s pediatrician that it is never to early to start reading to your baby, which can often leave us wonder why it is so important to start reading to your baby. What actually are the benefits to this? My ten month old recently started showing a strong interest in her baby books and I found myself doing some research and learning about the many benefits to us reading with her. Did you know that reading books aloud to baby stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world around them? Reading to your baby also helps them to develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. When you begin reading aloud to your baby, it provides them with background knowledge on their young world, which then helps them make sense of what they see, hear, and read.

If you are thinking about reading daily to your baby.. then you are on the right track! There are many studies that show if parents start reading to them when they are in their infancy, it can help them with their language acquisition and literacy skills. This is because reading to your baby in the earliest months stimulates the part of the brain that allows them to understand the meaning of language and helps build key language, literacy and social skills. When Should You Start Reading To Your Baby?
