I remember when I was eleven years old and standing in line at a fast food restaurant to order food. My mother looked down at me and asked what I wanted to order. I went on to tell her that I was not sure because I could not read the signs and thought nothing more of it. My mother wasted no time making sure I saw an eye doctor and got the glasses I needed, however looking back at those days… there was never a time I realized I needed glasses. As a child you just grow accustom to seeing a certain way and assume that is how everyone sees things. Children are too young to comprehend the complexity of vision and the importance of correcting it if needed. It’s no wonder that One in four children has an undiagnosed vision problem. I can only imagine how much longer I could have gone through life not realizing I needed glasses had my mother not picked up on the ques and took the initiative to bring me to an eye doctor, because she knew that when you Invest In Your Child’s Vision & Anything Is Possible!

Fast forward to 2014… I am now a mother of my own raising three children the best that I can. My eight year old daughter came home from school one afternoon, emptied out her backpack just like any other day and very nonchalantly handed me a form letting me know she failed a school eye exam. I looked at the form for a moment, so very confused… my daughter… can’t see?? How is that possible… how did I not know this! I then proceeded to write things down onto a chalk board and have my daughter stand in the other room and tell me if she could read any of it… that is how shocked I was to have received that notice! When she failed to recognize anything I had written on the chalk board, I took a moment to call her pediatrician and schedule an appointment before taking any further steps. Sure enough, she failed the eye exam there as well and that night I dinner I informed my husband, whom never signed the kids up for vision insurance, as that was not something we thought was needed. If you ever find yourself in this particular situation, that is where VSP® Vision Care would be of great help! VSP is the nation’s only not-for-profit vision care company whom has spent the better part of a decade developing high-quality, affordable individual plans that are now available in every state. Through a convenient monthly payment plan (which is available in 46 states) you can pay as little as $17 a month!

Looking back at the first two years of school, my daughter struggled immensely in reading, which I could not understand as she was able to do just fine at home. I was constantly getting emails/calls/letters home informing me that she wasn’t paying attention in class, chatting with friends, and not completing her work. Looking back I just think to myself “Well of course she was behaving that way… she couldn’t see the work up on the board!” I feel so guilty sometimes, like I should have known… I am her mother, how did I not know? But then I am reminded that about 20% of children struggle to read because of vision problems and that ten million American students have vision conditions that can impact learning. That is a lot of children with loving parents, like me, that did not suspect their child could not see. You would not believe how amazing third grade has been for my daughter now that she has glasses… her behavior is no longer an issue, she gets all A’s and 1 B, and… she is excelling in reading! I literally cried when the first report card came home, it’s such an amazing feeling to watch a once struggling child do well and be successful, fills your heart with so much joy and happiness!

By age five all children should have completed three eye exams, but 76% of kids are still not meeting that benchmark. I am so thankful that my daughter’s school does an eye exam at the beginning of the year, it undoubtedly paved the way for a successful school year for her. An annual comprehensive eye exam can ensure that correctable visual problems don’t become permanent. Please consider taking the initiative if your child’s school does not offer that service. If you know of a child, or have a child that needs to see an eye doctor, but can not afford it, consider sharing with them information about VSP® Vision Care, the largest not-for-profit vision benefits and services company in the U.S. They have recently launched #EyeGiveBack. Right now through June 30, 2015, for every individual vision plan purchased, VSP Direct™ will donate an eye exams and glasses to children in need, up to a retail value of $1 million. #EyeGiveBack is part of the VSP Direct™ commitment to building a better future for children in need.

  1. Your daughter looks great in her glasses very stylish! Eye health is SO important. We schedule our exams every year in the beginning of January when the kids are off from school and never miss!

  2. Taking good care of your eyes and getting regular check ups is so very important! love when my purchase helps out different organizations. It makes me want to purchase from them over another company. Your daughter is beautiful by the way!

  3. I didn’t get glasses until I was around 14, I think. And I’m long overdue to get an eye exam. Regular vision care is so important, especially for kids. You never know what they might be missing out on because they can’t see properly.

  4. All of my four daughters have glasses, I have always donated their glasses after they are done using them. I love your post, and I plan on checking out VSP Vision Directs web-page. The thought of working with a company that gives back make a lot of sense to me.

  5. Our son just brought home the same form not too long ago. We’re getting his eyes checked soon. *sigh* 😉

  6. As a teacher, I know how important great vision is for my students. So many kids struggle in school, only for us to finally figure out it was because they couldn’t see the board. Thanks for sharing insight on this topic.

  7. I agree. My children, husband and I just got new glasses. Many of us haven’t worn them before and for the kids I am lucky that other kids in school wear them which helps with the motivation.

  8. Good eye health is so important. It is amazing how many kids don’t get the opportunity to have their eyes checked on a regular basis and end up struggling with school because they can’t see properly. Thank you for sharing this very important topic.

  9. Your article is such a perfect timing with our son’s situaton. We just picked up his prescription glasses today. For a while, we did not know that he is nearsighted until the teacher notified us that our son could not read in far distances. I don’t know how his doctr did not tell us during his physical exam last time, I feel bad that we did not know. I am glad he can see better now though.

  10. oh little girl looks really nice in these glasses.its really important actually to take care of eyes and we should do the check up of eyes with routin. Also because eye sight keeps to get lower with time so we should go to the eye especialist very often.

  11. Your daughter is such a doll. And yes, totally agree our children’s vision is massively important, if they cant see at school it makes everything so much more challenging, thanks for sharing your story.

  12. Having a son that requires glasses to read, this article hit home for me. It is true that no matter what you should always make sure your child’s vision is taken care of. It is one of the beat things you can do for your child.

  13. VSP is great and so inexpensive for insurance. It is definitely important that kids’ vision be taken seriously, because it can really affect their studies and focus in school and they may not even realize why or what the underlying issue may be.

  14. Taking care of one’s eyes at any age is very important physically and mentally! Your daughter is pretty with or without glasses and glad she got the eye help she needed! Thanks for sharing this today!

  15. Great post! This is so very important. Two of my kiddos have had bad eyes since birth. Inherited from their dad. They both had surgery on their eyes really young and are now in glasses. We get all our kids eyes tested often, to be sure! I know quite a few mom’s in denial over their kiddos eyes and won’t take them in. Breaks my heart!

  16. We used VSP insurance for my son’s eye exam and glasses. It made much easier to pay for instead of having to pay it out of pocket all at once. Its about time to have his eyes rechecked. Thanks for the reminder.

  17. Vision is so important, I’m glad you are spreading the word about that. I had to wear glasses at an early age and my daughters both had to wear corrective glasses. My youngest daughter had to wear a patch to help correct her slow eye and I’m glad I took care of their vision while they were young (no glasses now) and I’m glad my parents took care of mine.

  18. Way to be a proactive parent and get your daughter help, even if it was prompted with a school eye test… and yay for your mom doing the same for you! While I don’t have kids yet, I’ll have to keep this provider in mind for the future. 🙂

  19. Those glasses look adorable on her! It’s important to catch kids not being able to see properly. It can hinder the kids learning at an early age and be hard to recover from as they get older.

  20. It is so important to have your children’s eyes checked out, I didn’t know I needed them for the longest time and when I did I didnt say anything it was an expense I did not want to put on my parents but now I am lucky I didnt get permanent damage.

  21. Vision is definitely one of the most important things to protect, especially for children. Addressing vision issues early can make a huge difference in a child’s life. My husband has an issue with eye muscle weakness. Has probably had this since childhood and it really affects his quality of life. He is doing physical therapy for it now. But I know he wishes he would have had the opportunity to do therapy at a younger age.

  22. How precious! 🙂 Love the photos, she is so beautiful! 🙂 The glasses look great on her as well! I definitely think that vision is so important and especially in young kids. Problems can develop early and at a younger age when its still “fresh”, these problems can possibly even be corrected versus waiting for an older age. Thanks for the informative post!

  23. That was such a struggle. Good thing you were able to do something right away. Vision is one of the most important senses of a person.
