School has been back in session for a little over a month here in Georgia and I feel as if we are still trying to get back into routine. Life can get so busy and hectic during the school year… preparing decent meals and snacks becomes a lot more difficult. With busy schedules and always on the run, we tend to rely on snacks as pick me ups throughout the day. Is this sounding familiar to you? Did you know that obesity in children has become a dominant health problem in the United States? Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadruped in adolescents in the past 30 years, according to the CDC.  Obese youth are at a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases (70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular diseases) and mental health issues. Back to School for many means back to bad eating habits for the entire family because they are squeezing in meals and snacks in between activities.

For this September, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, here are some quick tips from Kristen Schierenbeck, a nutritionist at Puritan’s Pride, a health and wellness brand. 

EAT TOGETHER — if you can’t make it dinner, plan for a quick family breakfast before the day starts. Whip up a smoothie to share.
SNACK SWAP — Stash healthy snacks in the front of the fridge for 3 p.m. snack attack: sliced fruit, crudité or even the veggies that are part of dinner.
KID-DOMINATED DINNERS — Every Sunday, ask the kids to choose one dinner for the week. The more influence kids have over their own meals, the more likely they are to eat them!
GROCERY SHOP = FAMILY BONDING — We know, it’s not relaxing to take the kids to the grocery store.  Turn the stress into an opportunity to talk about how to make healthy food choices for your whole family.
GO GRAIN-CRAZY — Grains are multi-purpose nutritional powerhouses. Make a huge batch on Sundays, and incorporate it weeklong: think quinoa with nuts and fruit for breakfast, topped on a salad for lunch, and in a stir-fry for dinner.
POWER UP— Put a vitamin on every breakfast plate, including moms and dads’. The routine will help you not to forget to take them.

There are some days, or weeks for that matter, where snacking on the go is unavoidable! Therefore it is up to us as parent’s to provide our children with healthy snack options. My thoughts on healthy snacking is that your children can’t eat unhealthy snacks if they don’t have the option. If there are no bags of potato chips and cookies in the pantry, then they won’t have the option of eating them. Fill your pantry with healthy, natural and organic snacks and allow that to be their only choices. I have been a mother for over nine years and have dealt with my share of picky eaters… and I tell you with all honesty… your children will not allow themselves to go hungry!
