The Most Costly Home Issues You Shouldn’t Let Linger

When you get used to living in a home, it can become a second-nature to ignore the little idiosyncrasies that come with it. Noises such as the house settling, some DIY that needs to be done, and other little issues can become nothing more than white noise. However, this kind of lackadaisical approach can become really risky when you ignore something you shouldn’t. Here are some of the issues that can become very expensive, very quickly.

Sounds and signs of pests

You might think that having a mouse in the house isn’t so big a deal, so long as they stay out of your way and you keep them away from the food. However, if you see any droppings, hear scratches in the walls, or see any signs of chewing or nesting, there are real hazards to your health and you should get in touch with pest removal services before they start multiplying. If you’re considering doing pest control on your own, make sure to take precautions to protect yourself and others from potential exposure to harmful substances.

Mold and damp

One of the surest signs that there is a leak. It doesn’t matter where this is coming from, you should address it immediately. Work with a plumber that can take a look at your pipes or, if these are coming from above, hire someone to take a look at the roof for signs of leaks or broken and damaged roof tiles. If it’s not caused by a leak, then you have a humidity problem that could be solved by a dehumidifier.

Low water pressure

There are a host of phenomena that can decrease the water pressure in your home, but sometimes it can be a leak that could affect the whole foundation of the home. Aside from making your plumbing less effective, if it’s caused by a slab leak, then it can result in extensive and expensive damage throughout the home. To that end, make sure you have a plumber check the causes and, if they can’t find it, it’s best to hire slab leak repair services.

Standing water

If you have water that remains standing in the garden, visibly puddling in the lawn hours or days after the rain, then poor drainage might be the problem, which can lead to foundation damage. However, if you have a septic tank or external drainage system, this can be the symptom of a leak as well which can be hazardous to your health.

Cracks in the wall

If you see any cracks traveling up the walls, it might be too late to prevent the causes of foundation damage, but it’s not too late to tackle them. Foundation repair can be expensive, as it often involves not only fixing the foundation itself but addressing the problems in the soil around the home. However, the longer you wait, the greater the risk of serious damage to a home that moves with every shift of the foundation.

Know what you shouldn’t ignore when it comes to your home. The quicker you make a move with any of the issues above, the less it’s going to cost you.

  1. Thanks for letting me know that seeing pools of water in our garden might be a sign of septic system issues. It hasn’t rained since last week but I see that a part of our lawn is damp. It might be better to look for professionals who can check if our septic tank needs to be cleaned or repaired.

  2. Thanks for pointing out that if you see standing water in your yard if you have a septic tank it could be due to a leak. My sister-in-law is hoping to purchase a piece of land out in the country and build a custom home on the property. She mentioned that if she does end up doing that, she’ll want to find a reputable professional to install a septic system.

  3. Thanks for helping me understand that standing water in the garden means that there is an issue with the septic tank. I guess I need to get my tank checked. It’s because it didn’t rain for the week, and I saw the standing water near the system which you talked about.
