I purchased this shelf for super cheap… probably over a year ago, and envisioned it being the perfect place to store toilet paper in our master bathroom. It ended up being one of those projects that I never got around to doing, and it just stood there holding the toilet paper and looking plain. I have put a few decor items on the shelf over time, but nothing that I fell in love with or kept permanently. I finally decided it was time to get working on this shelf, but didn’t want to spend a ton of money on decor and storage items. I challenged myself to use either what I already had around the house, or spend less than $20 at my local dollar store. I ended up completing this challenge and spent a very modest amount on finally completing my simple and budget-friendly bathroom organizer!
The first step was to make a trip to my local dollar store. Everything you see down below was a dollar each and if you look closely, I was under my original budget of $20 and only ended up spending $18! I found that using glass items and filling them up with decor items myself saved a lot of money. These items are around $10-30 when you purchase them at larger chain stores.
I am by no means talented when it comes to decorating my house, and often find myself frustrated when I see those magazine-worthy home decor photos on Pinterest… why can’t I think of stuff like that?! I really stepped out of my comfort zone with this project… I admit that I often depend on decor items that are already made because of my lack of creativity discourages me. This time, I told myself that I was going to grab all the items that I loved and just go with it… get creative!
I really wanted to cover up these baskets in a simple and non-permanent way, just in case I change my mind later. I took some garland and wrapped them around the wired baskets. Simple and affordable way to decorate them!
This is what I came up with in the end…not too bad in my opinion! I ended up using all of the items that I purchased, and a plant that I already had around the house. If your bathroom doesn’t have a window and the sun to keep a plant alive, I give an example of what I would do instead.
I am so happy that I finally managed to tackle this project and regret that I waited so long to finally get it accomplished. I love how simple and elegant this turned out. I am sure there is some room for improvement, but I can’t complain since I spent under $20!
