How To Store Meat And Prevent Freezer Burn

The freezer is a fantastic thing – it helps us to keep our food for a lot longer than humans used to, and some of them that you get can be quite large! But, the problem is – we can keep that stuff in there too long. How can you be sure to store food properly? What is freezer burn and why is it an issue? That’s what we’re going to take a look at here.

What is Freezer Burn?

Freezer burn is, in short, little dry spots in your food. What happens is that the moisture that is found on the outside of a food actually starts to evaporate. When that happens, there isn’t any moisture in certain parts of the food, and these dry pockets form in there – that’s what we call “freezer burn”

Why Should We Care?

We care because food waste is a huge problem, especially in developed countries. We throw away metric tons of food every single year, and we need to reduce the amount of waste we have. One of the ways to do that is to make sure that we use food before it can become freezer burned or before other problems happen to it.

Can You Use Freezer Burned Food?

Yes – but you probably don’t want to. It’s actually going to reduce how good it tastes, and the texture can get quite strange, even after you’ve cooked it properly. So, while it’s not “spoiled” in any way, it’s really not that appealing to eat freezer burned food.

Storing Meat in the Freezer

When you store meat in the freezer, be sure that you wrap them in a double layer of wax paper, aluminum foil, and/or plastic wrap. Then, after you do that, you put it in a freezer bag. Make sure that there are absolutely no extra spaces where air or moisture could build up – you can even find products that help you to suck the air out of these bags.

Preventing Freezer Burn in Other Foods

There’s a lot that you can do to prevent freezer burn in other foods. Even the best hot products need to be taken care of in a certain way in order to prevent freezer burn. The biggest thing is that you want to be sure that you take some time and wrap all of your frozen food properly. If it’s wrapped the right way, and there’s little to no air in the container or wrapping, you can prevent freezer burn pretty handily. You also want to be sure that you don’t let anything sit in the freezer too long, either.

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to freezing our food. Proper storage can go a long way and, if you have the right tools, you can keep everything delicious and ready to go for a long time. Consider looking at what is available and make some choices as to how you can take care of your food and prevent freezer burn from becoming an issue.
