How to Clean a Bearded Dragon Tank

Bearded dragons are some of the most appreciated reptiles due to the incredibly beautiful aspect of their skin and to their behavior. They are quite independent creatures that don’t need a lot of attention, yet they must live in an extremely clean environment in order to have a long and healthy life.

Cleaning a bearded dragon’s cage isn’t rocket science, but there are a few aspects that you must take into consideration when performing this activity daily or weekly.

Here’s what you should do on a daily basis in order to keep the tank clean:

  1. Clean the waste and feces by digging into the substrate
  2. Wipe any grease or dirt from the surface of the tank
  3. Wash the food and water tank and remember to always add fresh water

Daily cleaning is essential if you want to offer your reptile a clean environment to live in. However, it is absolutely necessary to take some time to clean it thoroughly, at least once per week.

Follow the below steps during the weekly maintenance:

Place the dragon somewhere safe

Having a back-up cage is so worth it. Whenever you want to clean the main tank, to redecorate it or to change the food and water, a small tank can be extremely practical.

Use special cleaning products

You can find plenty of special cleaning products at your local pet shop, but if you want to use basic stuff, you can simply mix a cup of bleach with a gallon of water and start wiping the tank with a sponge. Don’t forget to wear gloves. Let the bleach sit for a while and then rinse it off carefully. Make sure that no smell or toxic substances remain on the surface of the aquarium, as it could be dangerous for the dragon’s health.

Dry the aquarium properly

Use paper towels or a cloth to remove any water or stains and wait for every drop of water to dry before placing the reptile back into the tank. Make sure that it smells fresh, but no bleach odor remains.

Except for daily and weekly cleaning, it is essential to maintain the tank monthly, too. During the process, do all of the above mentioned steps and use a brush and more powerful cleaning products to make sure that all of the bacteria and waste are gone.

From time to time, it is recommended to expose the tank to high temperatures if you want to ensure that everything that is toxic or harmful is gone. To do that, you can warm up your oven to 250 degrees and leave the tank inside for half an hour. Also, rinsing it with hot water is useful, but you have to be very careful not to get burns on your skin.

When living in a clean habitat, the chances of a bearded dragon at a healthy, long and active life increase substantially. Also, you will avoid having weird smells in your home or office and you will keep a clean environment for yourself, too.
