Home Automation and Why It’s Bound to Become a Norm

Survival. We’ve come such a long way from brandishing sticks and sharp stones in order to chase down our prey. And that very well may be one of the most extreme understatements to ever be made. But you know what else is an understatement? To say that we humans depend on technology. Because the actual truth of it is that we need technology, and chief among tech that we hold above all else is the Internet.

Home Automation and Why It’s Bound to Become a Norm

And that’s exactly how it should be. Because of the Internet, we are now able to share huge amounts of information across a multitude of platforms without the restraints of time and distance. Information is easily available and that is one of the most important pieces of technologies that defines Millennials. It’s often joked that we are the most technology-dependent cohort, after all.

But that’s a good thing. Disruptive technology is good. And while change will not always be welcomed with open arms, it is as natural a course as things should be on. Everything from the Internet of Things, to the development of artificial intelligence, holds a definite role in the smart home, which, in my humble opinion, is the true synergistic interaction of all these technologies.

So why am I raving so much about the smart home? Because I honestly think that it has great potential to change our very way of life — at least inside the home.

My father once told me why he thought the washing machine was the greatest invention of all time — because it allowed mothers to teach their children how to read. At the time, I took it literally. But as I grew older, I began to understand why he said that. Technology should be used to help us get more in touch with our humanity. This often means spending time with your family, and the smart home is the perfect avenue to allow us to do that.

A smart home is defined as a residence wherein all WiFi-capable gadgets have the ability to interact with one another. And at the center of this network, you’re often going to find a smart speaker — whether it’s Apple’s iHome, Google’s Google Home, or Amazon’s Echo, it’s going to be there, listening for voice commands.

Each node in the network is going to be a smart appliance. Smart TVs, smart refrigerators, and smart washing machines are but a few examples, yet the one thing they all have in common is that they can all be controlled via voice control.

This frees up time for everyone. While some of you might be quick to dismiss its value, home automation holds one very important aspect to it. It allows you to focus on other aspects of your life and to potentially improve those aspects.

The ability to control appliances with voice commands also allows people with physical disabilities to move around their home with less difficulty. Things that they previously couldn’t do would suddenly become accessible to them. Though, granted, the need for reliable electricians isn’t going to go away soon, especially with the tendency of technology to break. But even so, I think it’s crystal clear that as we move into the future, home automation is going to be there with us.

For people who have a lot on their plates, being able to easily check these items off the to-do list and stop the obsessive worrying, home automation is reassuring and definitely worth the investment.
