DIY Snow & Winter Wonderland: Sensory Play

Our family loves to be outdoors as much as possible… this is until the cold starts rolling in. You see, here in northern we get that bitter freezing cold, except without all the fun snow to play in. This doesn’t make hanging outdoors very fun. I am forced to get creative during the winter months in order to keep my three kids from going crazy with boredom. There are also a whole lot of vacations due to the holidays, so there is even more pressure on me to keep my clan happy. I decided since we don’t have the luxury of receiving snow in the winter, why not make some of our own? Turned out to be a huge hit and something that my kids found far more fun than I had anticipated.

DIY snow is truly one of the easiest crafts we have ever made! All you need to create your brand new snow is baking soda and white conditioner (you can get large bottles of this for $1 at the dollar stores). I almost couldn’t believe that these two ingredient mixed together would result in homemade, but sure enough… it did! The texture reminds me of the really expensive moon sand that they sell in the toy section. I spent less than $3 on each of my children for this craft and that included the plastic container!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SNOW

What you need:

  • 3 cups baking soda
  • 1/2 cup white hair conditioner
  • Plastic container (for play time and storing the snow)
  • Winter wonderland figurines (also found a ton of these at the dollar store)

Directions

  • Mix baking soda and conditioner together in a large bowl
  • Stir together with a spoon until conditioner is well incorporated. Once the mixture is crumbly in texture, you are ready to play!

My youngest has always been a fan of getting her hands messy and sensory activities are always her favorite! This is such a simple and affordable activity that is fun for children of all ages, I even found myself enjoying it! What is so great about this activity is that it is simple, affordable and easy to clean up. A quick wipe down of the table with some Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes and a broom and dustpan for the snow that made its way to the floor… cleaned up in just a few minutes.

We found so many little winter wonderland figurines at the dollar store, my daughter truly enjoyed setting up her own winter wonderland and making the people play around in the snow.

She was so proud of her masterpiece and even insisted on giving her winter wonderland some Christmas lights to truly get in the holiday spirit!

I honestly could have cared less how much of mess this little girl of mine made… the look on her face as she played in her winter wonderland was priceless! She was all smiles and laughter for hours!

Wouldn’t this DIY make the perfect gift! Think about all of the possibilities when it comes to gifting it. This would be a very affordable way for your child to send in a gift to each of their classmates. You could make a large batch, put s small amount in some plastic sandwich bags, throw in a figurine, and put a homemade label on the outside!

This snow is fun for all ages and all three of my children (ages 4, 8 and 12) equally enjoyed playing with it!

This is also one of those amazing crafts that can be enjoyed over and over again! Simply place all of your snow in a plastic container along with all of its figurines, and store away until it’s time to play again.
