I am so shocked and amazed to have recently discovered that I’ve been doing my dishes completely wrong all of these years! See… I always assumed (as many others do as well) that prior to loading the dishwasher, I had to soak and rinse all of the dishes. I can’t believe the amount of work that I put into pre-washing my dishes, when it was completely unnecessary. What I didn’t realize that your dirty, food covered dishes are actually what helps to get them clean during a rinse cycle. Pre-washing your dishes is unnecessary because special enzymes latch onto the food, breaking it down so it can wash away. When you pre-wash your dishes you are leaving behind nothing for those enzymes to attach themselves on to and essentially making your detergent useless. Sadly, you are the one doing all the work while your dish-soap is just being washed away in the dishwasher. Unbelievable right? Well I was asked to host a party while educating my guest on how to properly wash their dishes. I have to admit that after reading all of that information, I still had my doubts. I was so worried that I would give this whole spiel to my guest, run filthy dishes through the dishwasher, just to open it and expose that the dishes were still dirty. So I decided to put these facts to the ultimate test and see if Cascade was telling the truth. Ultimately I was proven wrong and that, in fact, my dishes would come out sparkling clean when I left the dishes completely dirty.
Something else that I was not aware of is that my dishwasher actually contains a garbage disposal at the bottom, so running my dishes under water to get the small bits off is also unnecessary. Simply swipe the larger pieces off with your hand, place them in the trash and let the dishwasher handle the rest.
So once the party rolled around and I broke the news to my guest about how they have been doing their dishes wrong, I had a lot of skeptics on my hand. Plates covered in mac n cheese, a dirty dish that I had cooked brownies in the previous night… the stakes were high and it was time for Cascade to shine!
One of my lovely neighbors was kinds enough to load the dishwasher for my while I tended to my fussy newborn. I kept smiling as she would show me a dish and question whether or not she should put it in the dishwasher that dirty. I assured her that it would clean just fine and to go ahead and place it in the dishwasher.
Here are some great tips on how to load your dishwasher to obtain the best results:
- Stack your dishes high and low but please be sure that bulky items DO NOT block the sprayer.
- Place tall dishes and pans in the back of the bottom rack so they DO NOT block the detergent chamber.
- Place glasses and other fragile items in the top rack. This helps keep them from the powerful sprayer under the bottom rack.
- Set glasses between tines on the rack NOT over them as wet contact points can cause spots.
- Thread any long utensils through coffee-mug handles to help keep them secure in the wash.
- Check to ensure that there aren’t any stray utensils that will block the nozzle or sprayer.
- And a special call out for any big dishes: load them on the bottom rack, face down so the water is sure to reach all the nooks and crannies.
As you can see from the image above, Cascade did a spectacular job getting all our party dishes clean, as well as the brownie dish from the night before. I was so thrilled to have passed this knowledge along to my guest, we are all more than happy to know loading the dishwasher no longer has to be such a long task!
