This summer was full of adventures in the back yard, walks through the neighborhood and bike rides along the sidewalks. My four year old son spent most of the time trying to master riding his bike and working towards removing the training wheels. While he is very brave and ready to be riding on two wheels, he still needs much more practice with balance. There are so many things to focus on when you are learning to ride on two wheels and it can be quite overwhelming. Your child must remember when to balance, steer, pedal and use the breaks all at once… that’s by no means easy! That is when a balance bike comes in handy! What is a balance bike you ask? A balance bike has no pedals, no crank set and chain, and no training wheels, allowing your child to only have to focus on balance and steering. These balance bikes are also much lighter than your average bike, which gives your child even more control over using it.
Radio Flyer offers a fabulous new service that allows you to fully customize a balance bike for your child. You have the option of choosing either a wood or steel frame in pink or red. I chose to go with the wood frame for my son simply because I was in love with the style. It played both into my green living, as well as my preference for wooden toys for my children. I was so impressed with the quality of the wood and how light it was, yet sturdy enough to sustain many tumbles and falls.
Your next choice in customizing a balance bike is to decide on which of the two tire choices you prefer. The classic tires roll smoothly on even surfaces while the all-terrain air tires offer the ultimate smooth ride on sidewalks (plus they can travel over rough terrain.) We have a side walk in front of our house, a large driveway, a cuk de sac next to our house, plus a yard with tons of little hills. Since my son has so many different terrains he will be practicing his bike on, I found that the air tires would be the best option. As you can see from the images that these are great tires with impressive treads that are going to make riding the bike in rough terrain not a problem!
Once you are finished customizing your child’s new balance bike, there are three great accessories to choose from that will really make this bike stand out! You can add some fun streamers to the end of the handles, a ringing bell and a name plate. My son feels so incredibly special with the name plate displayed on his bike, this was probably his favorite feature! He also loves ringing the bell on his bike, as it adds to the great amount of fun he is already having when he uses the balance bike.
The frame, weight and structure of this balance bike are simply amazing and I could not be more pleased. The fact that it is light weight allows my son to practice balancing much more efficiently. He has a much greater handle and control over the bike. Eliminating the need to pedal makes it so he isn’t shifting from side to side and throwing his balance off. He really can just focus 100% on the balance and steering and has improved so much in just the short amount of time he’s had it.
Your child can easily build up their confidence in their riding ability while using this balance bike. You can see from the image below that my son was able to go from walking, running and then gliding in just moments. Our driveway is on a hill and he has been having a great time allowing gravity guide him down it as he holds hie legs out and attempts to balance. I just love seeing the smile on his face when he realizes how much he has improved and how much longer he can hold his legs up when gliding. Any item that can boost confidence in my child is one that I am very much in favor of!
