Before You Recycle, Upcycle! Create Beautiful Household Decor With Recycling

I live a pretty natural lifestyle and do quite a bit to keep my family both healthy and safe from harsh chemicals that can sadly be found in many of our every day products. We consume a lot of fresh vegetable and fruits and I am always looking for ways to create our meals from scratch. I have eliminated all of my household cleaning supplies with natural and safe brands, I have plants overflowing in every room, and I do my best to teach my children to live green. We have spent a lot of time this month working together to come up with fun and creative ways to use up our recycling. My daughter has created little houseplants all throughout the windowsills with old yogurt containers and even used a few cereal boxes to make a fairy house. I decided to create beautiful household decor with recycling and adapt the new motto… before you recycle, upcycle! I love the challenge of taking my recycled items and figuring out ways to turn them into an attractive piece of decor. Not only is this incredibly inexpensive to do, but its easy and doesn’t require you to be an expert crafter (in which I am totally NOT!)

The first thing you will need to do is gather up your recycled items and get an idea of what you have to work with. For my two projects you are going to need the following items listed in the photo below:

Taking an old coffee can, I glued the beginning of the twine to the base to begin. You do NOT need to glue along the way as you spin the twine around the can… I repeat… YOU DO NOT need to do this! This will take you forever, learn from my mistake friends, hehe. Instead, just wrap the twine around and periodically glue it to the coffee can just to keep everything in place. I wrapped twine around the coffee can two times to really give it a full and rustic look.

I was so pleased with how this turned out and what an easy craft is was to accomplish. You really can’t go wrong when making this and it could be utilized in a variety of ways. Whether you are storing some toothbrushes and toothpaste to keep the bathroom sink organized… or place a few fresh flowers in it… the possibilities are endless!

Speaking of toothpaste… have you heard of the brand Tom’s of Maine? This company holds a special place in my heart because I was born and raised in Maine, it wasn’t until February of last year did I move from the beautiful state of Maine. I was so thrilled to see one of my favorite brands located at my local Walmart when I moved to Georgia.

You can actually find all of the Tom’s of Maine products featured in this post right in the toothpaste aisle at Walmart!

Tom’s of Maine has all natural personal care and oral care products that are made with no artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, or preservatives. I am very careful about the oral care products that I allow my children to use… I mean they are putting into their mouths twice a day! I am always left with zero concerns when I provide my children with Tom’s of Maine silly strawberry toothpaste!

My next upcycling project requires you to get out the box cutter and cut out the bottoms of some of your recycled boxes. You will then need either some pretty card stock or some scrapbook paper. I found an entire book of beautiful scrapbook paper at Walmart for only $5. Measure and cut out your pieces of paper to tape onto both the outside and inside of your boxes. This is a fairly simple and self explanatory craft, there really is no need to go too in depth on how to conduct this craft.

These boxes would be perfect for the drawers in your bathroom and to help keep everything organized. I know all of my makes up and oral care stuff was a mess prior to making these boxes. Everything was just thrown into the drawer and half the time I was losing what I needed. These boxes not only keep you organized, but they are an attractive decor that will brighten up any room. I thought they looked great with all of the Tom’s of Maine products in them!

If you are ready to take the first leap this earth month and start using more safe and natural items… what are you waiting for? I honestly believe you will be happy with replacing old items with the Tom’s of Maine products,  make sure to grab a $1.00 off any Tom’s of Maine product purchase at Walmart coupon before you head out to the store.

  5. This post is full of creativity. We could never have thought that beautiful things can be made out of other stuff such as cans and boxes. The idea of turning the can (ready for disposal or recycling) into a toothpaste holder is splendid. I shall start looking for other ways to do this! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. It always amazes me how clever some of you women are ๐Ÿ™‚ That coffee can / toothbrush holder looks great! Plus it’s always good to teach kids that doing good can be fun too.
