Be Prepared For Baby Diaper Blowouts With This DIY Diaper Storage Bin

In August of 2014, we welcomed a beautiful baby girl into this world and our entire family instantly fell in love with her. Being that she was my third, you would think I would be some sort of expert and pro when it comes to newborns, but I stand to be corrected. Amongst the chaos an exhaustion of having a newborn, many of those things you believed to have been an expert on, quickly slip your mind. You think you are ready and prepared for every cry and coo… for every diaper change and hiccup. When my sweet baby Adeline was just a few weeks old, we decided to run some errands (just around town) as a family, my husband just needed to run into a few places and I thought it would be great to get out of the house with all of the kids. We arrived at our first destination, my husband parked in the shade and ran into the Tag Office to renew his vehicle’s registration. The kids and I sat in the car, very much enjoying each others company and the warm breeze blow through our hair and past our faces.

My first mistake in this story is forgetting to never change a newborn’s diaper right away, there’s always more than one rumble in the diaper before they are done! My second mistake was assuming my lap would be the perfect place to do a quick diaper change. So I proceeded to pick my newborn baby up from her seat, lay her down on my lap, her head wresting on my knees and her bottom facing my stomach. The third mistake I made from here was forgetting that newborn babies are a lot like playdoh machines, just lift their legs and they will release all the gas and poo that was previously causing them discomfort. So all at once I made three rookies mistakes and the result was a baby whom was clearly not done pooing and a shirt that was now saturated in baby poo. Did I mention she is exclusively breastfed? I took three mustard colored poos to the chest! My husband arrived just in time to see the aftermath and assist me in the cleanup. Thankfully I always leave the house prepared, whether we a few miles away or a few hours… you always have to be prepared for poop explosion! There is no doubt about it, babies poo A LOT and the last thing you want, when rummaging through your diaper bag is to realize you are all out of diapers! This can happen often if you find yourself storing diapers in your bag, I highly suggest putting them in something that allows you to see when you are running low.

So I am a bit obsessed with upcycling lately if you couldn’t tell from a few of my blog posts last week. I decided this would be a great opportunity to show you another one since you all seem to love them so much! You know the diaper boxes your baby’s diapers come in? What about all those boxes you get from stuff you receive in the mail? What if I told you that instead of just tossing them to the recycling bin, you could turn them into a beautiful diaper storage bin? This is such a simple and inexpensive craft… your friends and family will assume you paid big bucks for it at a store! All you will need for this craft in your a cardboard box, trusty glue gun, several yards of clothes line rope, 1 yard of your favorite fabric, and some embellishments.

The first thing you will want to do is cut the flaps off from your cardboard box, A box cutter will be the quickest way to do this. Then trim your yard of fabric so there is enough to cover the inside of the box. Glue the edges of the fabric to the box in order to keep it in place and then trim the fabric around the edges. You will then want to take out the glue gun and start gluing the clothes line rope to the outside of the box. For this particular project I didn’t find that it was necessary to glue every inch of the rope onto the box. I did however glue all of the rope that was on the front of the box since that is the focal point and which side you will see most often. On the side and the back of the box I simply glued is sporadically in order to keep the rope in place and prevent it from sliding down the box. This is a fairly quick process and once you get the feel for it, this should be done within an hour or so. The final step is optional, but I thought it added some great personality to the box. Add some embellishments onto the outside of the box. As you can see I glued a flower and (of course an owl) onto the outside, this made the box look so professional looking! You can find items such as these at any craft store, or you could upcyle items around the home!

Your final step is to head on over to your local CVS and visit the diaper aisle. One of the best ways to ensure that you are prepared for baby diaper blow outs is making sure you have an appropriate stock of Huggies diapers from CVS Health on hand. Right now there is a really awesome coupon available to help you save on diapers! Make sure to print out the $2 off of $10 Huggies coupon  before leaving for the store. We are really big fans of the Huggies Snug & Dry diapers, as they are so gentle on my daughter’s sensitive skin and they do wonders when it comes to preventing diaper explosions.

I just love this DIY diaper bin and it was so simple to make! Though my diaper explosion days are far from over, this bin ensures that I can always keep a close eye on the quantity of diapers I have available. I can always be certain of when I am running low and that I need to go purchase more. This bin is also very light and would be a great place to store all of your diaper changing items in the trunk of your car on days that you are at the beach or playing at the park.

I hope you enjoyed discovering another one of my upcycling posts and that I have inspired you to find ways to make use of your recycling. There are so many fun, simple and easy ways to create beautiful decor from recycling… and it is such a great way to show our children how we can help our planet by putting less waste into it.

  1. I always like a good upcycling project. Your diaper basket looks great. I have also had bad luck with diaper changes so I can relate to your story! #client

  2. I knew the morning of Caleb’s baby dedication we could potentially be in for it. Exclusively breastfed as well, he had some digestive & bowel issues (that we worked through beautifully), but on occasion, he could go a couple days without the pooper. As out pastor held him up for all to see & then began to pray, I could hear his little tummy & just smiled….what else can you do at that point?!? You got it….all the way back to the 5th row, people were giggling as it proceeded to come from every arm/leg hole of his precious outfit and up behind his neck. He handed Caleb back to his daddy, wiped his hands & proceeded to declare that this child would do amazing feats for all to hear & see! Haha….and we made a mad dash for the nearest restroom!

  3. Oh my god…that story is crazy Marie. What a awesome story to tell when the kids are older and what a laugh! !!

  4. Oh, my daughter was born in 28/10/2014. She’s very cute, my husband and I love our daughter so much. Now, she can walk some steps, of course, she still uses diaper…and your diaper basket is great for me to do follow…
