A Heart Healthy Trail Mix

Heart healthy is an extremely important topic for me and one that hits very close to home. My father has had three heart attacks over the past decade and his most recent one was several months ago. I am so thankful that he is still here with us and that I am able to share with you that he has made miraculous changes in his life. Changing your eating habits can be quite difficult and takes time to get use to. I often tell people that eating healthy does not mean you need to sacrifice that sweet tooth, so long as you are indulging in moderation. In honor of hearth healthy month I thought it would be great to share with you a very yummy heart healthy trail mix that is very simple to create.

A Heart Healthy Trail Mix

Cheerios has recently come out with another fantastic cereal that is sure to make your morning breakfast routine delicious and healthy. Grab yourself a box of the Cheerios™ + Ancient Grains, your favorite peanuts, a bag of mini marshmallows and a bag of M&Ms and you have everything you need to make your heart healthy trail mix.

So what is this new Cheerios™ + Ancient Grains you ask? Well let me tell you about this great new cereal that just hit the shelves at your local Publix grocery store. With only 5 grams of sugar and ancient grains like KAMUT wheat, spelt, and quinoa, Cheerios™ + Ancient Grains is the ideal breakfast to start your day. The toasted whole grain oats and clusters are lightly sweetened for the perfect taste. KAMUT® Wheat has a rich buttery taste, the Spelt contains a sweet hazelnut taste and the quinoa is a nutty taste in a crunch oat cluster. These key ingredients are good for you because they have 12 vitamins & minerals, 17g whole grain per serving, are low in fat and saturated fat and cholesterol free AND they may reduce the risk of heart disease!

A Heart Healthy Trail Mix

Trail mix is one of the easiest snacks to make and a great way to supplement all of those unhealthy foods you normally eat throughout the day. I like to fill a small bowl of trail mix and place it in a central location in the home, that way everyone is free to grab a handful as they go on throughout the day.

This is also a really great treat to pack the children for lunch OR if they are having a classroom Valentine’s day party, this will be quite popular. All of the kids will think they are getting something sweet, but we know they will be receiving a healthy treat.

Fill up little plastic bags and throw them in your diaper bag or purse, that way you have a healthy snack to eat when you are on the go. I am always stopping at fast food places or coffee shops when out running errands, this is a brilliant way to avoid that!

  1. I did not know Chex had a chocolate version of their cereal. That would be great to use in a Muddy Buddy recipe.

The ancient grains and the Chex granola mix would be great incorporated into a trail mix. The Nature Valley bars would be a great addition to any snack bag to eat on the go.

  2. I can’t wait to try the Cheerios and Ancient Grains! I love all kinds of Cheerios and think this will be another favorite!

The strawberries and white chocolate mix will be perfect for Valentine’s Day!

  3. I had a mild heart attack a few years ago. I walk everyday for exercise and pay close attention to my diet. Almost always read the labels to find the best products for myself and my family.

  7. I like the sound of the Cheerios with Ancient Grains. We have tried several of the ancient grains and we love Cheerios anyway, so we will have to give them a try when we find them in the store.

  8. I am going to try the honey-peanut butter bars using the Ancient Grains instead of the Honey Nut. I think it will be a yummy snack.

  9. I am so excited to try the nature valley crisp bar. I looked at the recipes and I am excited to try the strawberry shortcake chex mix treats.
